Apriil 20th - Every Three Days - Karen Buckley

On average every three days a woman is killed by a man.

Every third day, in our #EveryThreeDays campaign, I write about a woman killed by a man. Previously in this campaign, which started on May 2nd 2021, I have remembered 121 women, the last being Susan Davenport.

The BBC reported in September 2015:

A man has been jailed for life for murdering Irish student Karen Buckley, whose body was found on a farm four days after she went missing in Glasgow. After meeting her outside a nightclub in April of this year - Alexander Pacteau killed the 24-year-old, who was from Cork.

The 21-year-old admitted bludgeoning her with a spanner and strangling her in his car before hiding Ms Buckley's body in a barrel he stored at a farm. At the High Court in Glasgow, Pacteau was jailed for a minimum term of 23 years.

Rather unusually the sentencing of Pactteau was recorded on TV cameras recorded and then broadcast - in many ways it makes watching somewhat harrowing but it perhaps gives a good insight into what occurred that night in April 2015.

A year on in April 2016 the Irish Post followed up this sad story saying:

Karen's death deeply resonated with the Irish community in Britain, as well as in her native Co. Cork. A year on, her killer Alexander Pacteau is serving a life sentence in Shotts Prison, 20 miles outside of Glasgow. Memorial services take place this week both sides of the Irish Sea to mark the one-year anniversary of her untimely death.
